Importing and Preparing Geometry in Blender

Objective

This tutorial outlines the steps to import geometry into Blender and prepare it for further editing.

Key Steps

  1. Open Blender and Import Geometry

    • Open Blender.

    • Navigate to File > Import > FBX.

    • Locate the FBX file and select it to import.

  2. Check Geometry Scaling and Alignment

    • Inspect the imported geometry for proper scaling and alignment.

  3. Clear Parent Transformations

    • Select all geometry.

    • Go to Object > Parent > Clear Parent and Keep Transformation.

  4. Apply Location Transformation

    • Press Ctrl + A and select Location to apply the transformation.

  5. Delete Empty Groups

    • Go to Select > Select by Type > Empty.

    • Press Delete to remove all empty groups.

  6. Clear Sharp Edges

    • Select all geometry and enter Edit Mode.

    • Press Ctrl + E and select Clear Sharp.

  7. Shade Smooth the Geometry

    • Exit Edit Mode and select Shade Smooth to improve the appearance.

  • Ensure that the FBX file is compatible with Blender to avoid import issues.

  • Be cautious when deleting empty groups; ensure they are not needed for your project.
